This beautiful large cortijo is a well-loved place; for many locals this is the house they would buy if they won the lottery.

It has no immediate neighbours and yet is only a five-minute walk from the town

It is a solid weight bearing brick house with insulated cavity walls and a pentile insulated roof with old tiles. The whole house is raised 50 cm from the ground to avoid any damp. It is a 165m single story building with a large independent basement studio. The house was built and designed by an English architect with internal distribution designed by his wife. Only top quality materials were used and there are several antique doors and windows.

The house is divided into two wings connected by a very large open plan sitting/dining room. This means that the master bedroom with adjoining bathroom is completely independent of the guest wing with it´s two bedrooms and own bathroom. All the bedrooms have large built-in wardrobes. There is an outside washhouse for tools and other utilities.

The house has a solar water heater and a large wood-burning stove in a fireplace. The land is watered by the acequia and also by well water whenever you need it.

There are two large patios, a summer north facing one with a vine and a southern winter sun trap terrace protected from the prevailing wind.

The gravel entrance drive can fit three parked cars with two more on the other side of the main gate

We have an alberca that was designed to be used as a swimming pool that just needs a pump installation to be fully usable.

The land is made up of three terraces surrounded by a stone wall. There are many fruit trees and some of the tallest trees in the area that make a very shady and cool garden with ample lawns. We have an excellent gardener who we recommend to the family who buys the house.

Location

It takes you a couple of minutes by car to get to Orgiva, the nearest town. You’ll find banks, cash machines, post office, various supermarkets, numerous bars & restaurants, 3 health shops, a police station, all schools and 24 h medical services.

Orgiva has developed into a small centre of alternative culture, combining old Spanish tradition with the ecological lifestyle of a young foreign community. 

Driving 35 minutes along a beautiful mountain road takes you to Salobreña, the nearest beach of the Costa Tropical.

Granada is a 50 minutes’ drive away.  Another 30 minutes take you to the ski resort of Sierra Nevada. Skiing is possible between December and May. The highest lifts take you up to 3.400 metres and from there one enjoys unforgettable views of Granada and right across the Med to Africa.

The Moors lived until the end of the 16th century in the Alpujarras. We not only still use their water channels and water deposits, but their original arabic names too. A proposal has recently been submitted to declare the Alpujarras a UNESCO world heritage site.

Hiking is pure pleasure here. It takes a 20 minute car drive to reach the borders of the National Park of Sierra Nevada. You can watch eagles circle in the blue skies, see ibexes fearlessly cross the cliffs above you and feel part of the magnificence of untouched nature all around.
