Location
The Albaicín or Albayzín is a neighborhood in the east of the Spanish city of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is located at an altitude of 700 to 800 meters above sea level.
Population began in the Iberian period, and there was scattered Roman settlement. There is no evidence of Islamic settlement prior to the arrival of the Zirid Berbers, so it is assumed that the city was abandoned from the end of the Roman Empire until the founding of the Zirid kingdom (1013), when it was surrounded by walls (Alcazaba Cadima). According to some linguists, it owes its current name to the inhabitants of the city of Baeza who, exiled from it after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, settled in this area of Granada outside the existing walls. Other linguists claim that the name comes from the Arabic al-bayyāzīn (in its Granada pronunciation with imala, al-bayyīzīn), which means the falconers' suburb. However, the fact that there are many other neighborhoods with that name in Andalusia, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz), Alhama de Granada, Salobreña and Huéneja (Granada), Antequera and Villanueva de Algaidas (Málaga), Baena (Córdoba), Porcuna and Sabiote (Jaén), and Constantina (Seville), casts serious doubt on this theory.[citation needed] There are also neighborhoods with this name in other parts of Spain, such as Campo de Criptana (Ciudad Real), the result of the expulsion of the Moriscos after the Alpujarras Rebellion, or Pastrana (Guadalajara), a neighbourhood created by Queen Ana de Éboli to accommodate the Moriscos from the Kingdom of Granada.
The truth is that "Albaicín" always refers to a neighbourhood located on a hilltop with a distinctive population, disconnected from the rest of the city.
The fact that this neighborhood is not properly considered a suburb in the 21st century does not mean that it was not considered one in the Middle Ages.
It constitutes one of the ancient centers of Muslim Granada, along with the Alhambra, the Realejo, and the Arrabal de Bib-Arrambla, in the flat part of the city.
